Colleen,

I'm happy to hear that you found it helpful and that your panel was such a success! I look forward to seeing you in the Yahoo Pipes class.

Hi Dawn,
This post could not have come at a better time! We just had our inaugural Travel and Words conference for Northwest Travel Writers (www.travelwritersconference.com) and I forwarded this post for everybody on the committee to read. It was invaluable.

I was a first-time moderator at this conference and it helped me immensely. As a matter of fact, the panel I moderated received the highest marks at the conference!

Thank you for the great advice and see you at your advanced Yahoo Pipes class in December!

I'm about to moderate my first panel at a major conference, so love the advice! One extra piece I would have is to make sure that there is a slide with the panelists names on it (preferably in the order they are sitting). As an audience member, I sometimes lose track and then am shy about asking a question of a specific panel member. This is particularly useful if there has been a last minute substitution.

Kim,

Absolutely! I'm a big fan of calling BS on panelists and asking a panelist to jump in to disagree. Panels where everyone agrees, smiles, and nods can be a real snooze.

I'd add that you should not be afraid to be a bit confrontational. People like animated panels, and part of what breeds that is disagreement and controversy. So a healthy, but respectful, level of pitting panelists against each other, or the moderator calling 'bs' on a panelist assertion, works.

"Panelist A, you make open source SW, so what do you think about what panelist B just said about open source?"

"Panelist C, you say XYZ, but you can't possibly expect the audience to buy that. really. explain."
