Thanks for the thoughtful analysis here. When I say "own", I do mean it in the sense of being responsible for stewarding a community, at least from an organization's perspective. It's like a dinner party... who "owns" it? No one. It's an absurd thing to even consider. But the host is responsible for a clean, well lit space, with great food and drinks, and ensuring a good mix of people.

I agree with your statement about developer an open source communities... although I have an example from Autodesk of an open source community being stewarded by product marketing staff.

It will be interesting to see how this issue evolves in 2008!</description>
